1)Analyze how Annan tries to make his speech effective. Pay particular attention to the use of rhetorical devices.
The text “„Kofi Annan on Universal Values“ is a speech of Kofi Annan. The speech deals with universal values. The author sets out to convince the reader of his views that globalisation connects people to make their lives peaceable and wealthy. This extract is a persuasive text that has a neutral style. This text is kept in a formal tone because the author is serious about his topic.
Kofi Annan starts his speech with a rhetorical question .” Do we still have universal values?(l.6) With his question the author wants people to think of values that have the same meaning for everyone. Then he says that “[...] globalisation brings us all closer together,”(l.7) This strong argument emphasizes great importance of global process that makes our world so narrowed. It follows that we are “a global community”(l.10-11). But this point can be true only on condition that “we have global values to bind us together”(l.11) According this statement we have similar values that join us. On the one hand “globalisation has brought great opportunities”(l.17).One the other hand globalisation makes “many new stresses”(l.17) Here Annan depicts positive and negative effects of globalisation. In conformity with the Universal Declaration “everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and of his family, including food, clothing, housing and medical care[..]”.(l.22-26) The author refers to the international law because this makes his convictions credible. Likewise with next regard to the Declaration the author introduces the reader to “the Millennium Development Goals”(l.33). These aims are “such rights [for] education, basic health care and clean water a reality for all”.(l.34-35) So Annan gives a vivid picture of the Millennium Declaration's content.
At the end of the text the author repeats the image of globalisation that “has brought us closer together”(l.44) This thesis the author uses twice in his speech. So he gives people the feeling of togetherness. Even if they don't have “the same religious or political beliefs,[..] [the same] skin colour.”(l.66), nevertheless all people are equal. But the history shows us many instances of racial tension like “ethnic cleansing, genocide, terrorism.[ ..] and discrimination”(l.69). Here Annan uses an enumeration to illustrate to the reader big problems of the past and present age.
The author closes his speech with mention the event that takes place on 11 September 2001. In his opinion this incident creates “clash of civilizations” (l.75) that separates “Islamic and western values” .(l.77)
