Please help my with my grammar. I have toefl test in 2 weeks and have to practice essays. Therefore would you be so kind to read my essay?

Is the ability to read and write more important today than in the past? Why or why not? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

Some people think that you have to have the ability to read and write in our modern society. Others think that nowadays that the basic concept of reading and writting is old fashioned and can be replaced by watching or listening. The issue is a controversal one, but in my opinion a closer examination reveals that reading and writing have much more positive than negative sides for several reasons. In this essay I will explain my posotion providing examples to support my claims.

One reason why reading and writting are possibly the most important abilities in our lives ist hat communication has become extremely important in our modern society. While it may be true that you can communicate in a lot of different ways, the act ofcommunication through writting and email is one of the most important when you are working in a big company. However, communication with your friends over the internet also needs the two important abilities. For example when you are using facebook you cannot talk to them. The only to get in contact with your friends is through the live chat. Therefore the ability to read and write is extremely important for daily communication.

Another reason is that the ability to read and to write are basic conpect of education. Nowadays children start to learn the alphabet at the age of six. The teachers goal is to learn every child in their class to read and to write after their first year. Nevertheless young children will practise this ability everyday, because they need it for their further studys. To illustrate this point let`s take the example of africa. In africa many people do not go to school because they have to work hard to feed their families. Therefore many of them are not well educated. Consequently they do not get a good job and have to stay poor.

On the other hand, some may argue that reading and writing are a waste of time in our modern society, because it is possible to learn a lot of things through listening and watching. These individuals may point to examples of learning through the internet. It is very clear from these observations that you have to learn through videos or doing things. However, there are two negative sides of this approach. First you have to have a connection to the internet, which is extremely costly. Secondly you have to have somebody to show you things you want to learn. Therefore it learning things through watching or doing is extremely time consuming.

In summary while ther are arguments to be made for both sides, it is clear that there are greater advatages to learn how to read and write, because it is one of our most important abilities in our everyday live. Certainly I recommend everybody practise their abilities everyday.
