Imagine, you are alone on the world: who would give you an advice when you are in trouble? Who would be the person, those affections you would win, when you need love or a group of persons with them you have to speak about your problems?
Well, there are a lot of benefits having friendship or generally good contacs to some people. For example when you are searching a holiday job you can ask your friends if they have one for you. Your friend could tell his employer that a friend of him is searching a job and that you are determined, nice and so one. If the employer like your friend, he should like you too normally.

I don't quite understand your logic. Why would an employer like you if they like your friends?

Because you think that the friend of your friend could have the same characteristics, so that you could like the friend of your friend too.
