Is society too depedent on computers
In 1999 people were afraid about the end of the world and a worldwide computercrash that should occur at New Year's eve. This crash should affect all computer controlled systems like the general supply of energy , the traffic regulation and even the nuklear missile launch.
Since in the turn of the year nothing happend people didn't care anymore about the problems of a highly computer dependent society. Therefore I want to reconsider the question if society is too dependent on computers or not.
I believe a very important aspect that speaks for a computer dependent society is the computerised financial sector. All transactions, depts, and credit balances are recorded on computers. An error in the system could result in the lose of data. People wouldn't be able to draw money because there are no information about their balances. Transactions that were made on the share market would lose their rentability because the profit often depends on actual prices. If there is no transaction data there is no prove that stocks have been bought at a special time or for a special price. Altogether many people would lose a lot of money.
Another good example, that demonstrates the dependence of society on computers is the communication. There is almost no possibility to communicate without computers, excepting the verbal one. Telephone conversations are connected through servers, letters must be sorted by computers before they can be delivered and there is either no way to send an email without a computer. If the communication systems would crash you couldn't phone the ambulance or the firestation .There would be no television and no newspapers, because printers and broadcasting are completly computerised. In conclusion the worldwide communication would come to an standstill.
On the one hand computers are a huge benefit for society. They help to save lives,they ease money transactions and they provide a fast and worldwide communication.On the other hand we must be aware that entire sectors are completely computer controlled and that a crash would mean that they will stop working.
Im of the opinion that the society is very dependent on computers and that this dependence will even increase in the future.
