Game of Thrones paper - King Joffrey

Beitrag von newunclehorse »

Hi everyone. So I want to write this paper (wordcount 1500) about Joffrey of Game of Thrones do any of you guys watch the show at all?
I wanted to argue something like :
Despite his innocent looks, Joffrey is evil incarnate. For one thing, he is incapable as a king. Secondly, he is sadistic. (Does this work as an argument for a first year academic paper in literature. So I want to analyze how his looks contradict his behaviour. Further, I kind of want to bring cinematography into it and how it adds to his maliciousness and I wanted to touch upon how all of this affects the audience) Do you think one could find secondary lit. to support that argument?
I am really bad at finding arguments. Could you please help me improve my argument or if it does not work suggest one that will? I would really appreciate it. I hope this request isn't too rude.
Thank you

Actually, I watch it... ..

As for your arguments.. I agree with you saying that Jeoffry is evil incarnate, and while I think that him being sadistic backs up your argument, the fact that he is incapable as a king, i.e. that he lacks knowledge and probably experience as king, does not really stand in connection with him being evil incarnate. Do you know what I mean? Being a bad king is not a behaviour.. I would much rather focus on his typical behaviour. If I remember correctly, he never smiles and has a rather hot temper, he tends to shout and talk down to people, at the same time he is a bigmouthed coward (remember the scene when Arya is practising the wooden sword down at the river and Jeoffry gets all mouthy with her until she hits her.. he starts crying and tells his mother).

The innocent looks you mention, he might look innocent, being young but he has a certain evil look, don't you think? He never smiles, if he does try it looks more like a grimace, he is rather pale and skinny, he often clenches his fists..

I also like the idea of bringing cinematography into your argument, how do you want to do this, I mean can you give an example of "visible" maliciousness? It's been a while since I watched it .. I can't remember the makers using any specific colours etc. to point out his maliciousness?

To sum it up for now, I'd go for his typical behaviour to support your argument that he is evil incarnate. Once you have done this, use the examples you have given to compare them to his innocent looks. Finally, mention the cinematographic aspects.

I hope this helps !

Thank you very much Keswick. What do you think if I put it like this: In Game of Thrones King Joffrey Baratheon is the antagonist the audience loves to hate (language might be too sensational). This is inter alia due to two reasons. First, he is evil incarnate (here I would discuss a scene or two, where good ol' J is just being a prick) Secondly, he is incapable as a ruler (selfish behavior etc..) As for the cinematography I do not know yet. Do these two supporting points work with each other , is there an umbrella? For instance his being a terrible human being.
A question the lecturer always asks is: why does this argument matter, what is the effect it has? That's what I always struggle with.
