What does the -ed in open-minded mean?

Beitrag von h2k47 »

Hello,

I have a question about compound adjectives in English. In words such open-minded, the word 'minded' is classified here as an 'adjective' according to grammar sources.

I would like to know what kind of 'ed' was used in 'minded'. I mean is it a sort of participle similar to adjectives such as 'create+ed' in sentences like 'The museum, created in the 15th century, was one of the oldest monuments in the world' where 'created' here means that someone has created the museum.

In other words, when I say 'open-minded', does this mean that someone has helped me become open-minded, OR it was only my effort that made me open-minded?

Thanks for your patience and help... :big_thumb:

The suffix -ed is, amongst other functions, a way of creating adjectives. When forming adjectives its meaning is the same as -ig in German.
