Section One
On the Beach

zu 1:Like everyone else Moira Davidson knows that her end is coming, that in a certain time she will be death. She has barely anything to do, so she drinks a lot of alcohol, maybe to forget the horrible situation. At one point her friends Peter and Mary Holmes give her the task to help Peters Commander Dwight Tower to forget his past. While spending time with him she started to accept their destiny and as time goes by she fall in love with him. She gives up the alcohol and started to give her live some arrangement. For example she joins a secretarial course.

zu 2:Dwight Towers was in the Navy for a very long time. For him as Commander it would be easy to take Moira with him for this “last job” but even at the end he respects the rules. Another reason is the loyalty to his dead wife. The whole time he acts like she was still alive. It won’t be right to die in the arms of another woman.

zu 3:Everyone is acting in a different way in this time. Some accept the situation and others don’t. People may say that Peter and Mary won’t accept because they act like always and make plans for a longer time but I think they do. Maybe Peter more than Mary but for both its very hard because of their daughter Jennifer. For parents is the death of their children even harder than their own.

zu 4:I have many ambitions and I think most of them or maybe all I will fulfil just because of the fact that I’m young and got still plenty of years to live. Some of my ambitions are nothing special and many people have the same. For example an “interrail” trip through France or skydiving or bungee jumping. My biggest ambition for the moment is to have a Gibson Hummingbird guitar. Since I was little I liked her beautiful design and once I had the opportunity to play on her. Since then I’m in love with this guitar. Unfortunately it’s a very expensive guitar and hard to find in the countries I live. I think it will take a long time till I’ll have her but whatever it takes to got her I will do it. Even if I have to fly to America to by her there.

Section Two
The Apple Tree

1.The two apple trees represent two women of the protagonists live. The one is like his late wife Midge and the other one is like a girl he once kissed when he worked on a farm. The trees are very similar to the women. One looks thin, unhappy and tired, like Midge did when she was alive and the other one is straight and strong and reminds the protagonist to the happy, pretty girl on the farm.

2.He smiles because now he has a reason to cut the tree down. All the time it was a pierce in his eyes but when he first wanted to cut it down he couldn’t because Willis wanted to give the tree a chance. But now Mrs Hills need the wood and so, with cutting the tree down, he can finally end up with this chapter of his life he thinks.

3.That the marriage of the two wasn’t very happy is obvious. None of them enjoy it and the protagonist even cheated on his wife by kissing another girl. They had a dreary live. Midge is working the whole time and it’s like her only purpose in live is to serve her husband. He is a lazy and selfish person. He never helped his wife but she even didn’t ask him to. It seems that they could be happier when they weren’t married to each other. But would they really be? They are personalities that perfectly fit in each other: one that dominate and one that wants to be dominated. So would they be happier if he had to do things by his own or if Midge doesn’t had to work the whole day? I don’t think so. Like Midge needs someone like her husband, he needs a person like Midge. Both live life like it is not like they made it. They would never change a thing. It’s just the way their lives should be. So at the end no one is to blame for the unhappiness of this marriage. It’s just the way things are.

4.Its like the tree has taken revenge for Midge. He let the protagonist suffer like Midge suffered in her life and when the branch touches him like a hand it seems to say: Its me. I'm still here.

Section Two
The Apple Tree

1. The two apple trees represent two women of the protagonist
s live life (of Dwight Tower’s life?) The one is like his late wife Midge and the other one is like a girl he once kissed when he worked on a farm (Ich nehme an, du meinst Moira). The trees are very similar to the women. The one looks thin, unhappy and tired (kein Komma)like Midge did when she was alive and the other one is straight and strong and reminds the protagonistto of the happy, pretty girl on the farm.

2. He smiles because now he has a reason to cut the tree down.
(Eigentlich muss ich raten, welcher Grund und welcher Baum gemeint ist) All the time it was a pierce in his eyes he looks at the tree with piercing eyes, but when he first wanted to cut it down he couldn’t because Willis (Wer ist Willis?) wanted to give the tree a chance. But now Mrs Hills (Wer ist Mrs Hills?) need the wood and so, with cutting the tree down, he can finally end up with put an end tothis chapter of his life he thinks.

3. That the marriage of the two wasn’t very happy is
was obvious. None of them enjoyed it and the protagonist (I’d mention the name) even cheated on his wife by kissing another girl. They had a dreary (live life) marriage. Midge is was working the whole time and it’s it seemed like her only purpose in live life is was to serve her husband. He is a lazy and selfish person. He had never helped his wife but she even didn’t even ask him to. It seems that they could be could have been happier when if they weren’t hadn’t married to each other. Like Midge’s character needs someone like her husband, and he needs a person like Midge. Both lived life led their lives like it is not like they made wished it. They would never change a thing. It’s just the way their lives should be. So at the end no one is to blame for the unhappiness of this marriage. It’s just the way things are.

4. It
s like It looks as if the tree has taken revenge for Midge. He (It) The tree let the protagonist suffer like Midge suffered in her life and when the branch touches him like a hand it seems to say: Its me. I'm still here”.

Also vielen Dank!

Hallo,

Hier meine antworten :

Section One - on the beach

1. how does she change and why ?
Moira hasn't got any hope at the beginning of the story and she can't see a point in living as if there is a long future.
She knows that she has to die soon , like everybody , and she can't understand why some people are acting like their life's will last a long time.
She starts to change her attitude after she gets to know Dwight towers.
Moira stops drinking and takes a sectrtarial course , so she can get a job , although she knows that she won't live long enough to complete the course , let alone get a job.
But she now agrees with Dwight that it is better to be actively trying to reach a goal when the end is near.

2.why does Dwight not take Moira with him ?
Dwight objectively knows that his wife and his two kids are already dead like everyone else in the northern hemisphere .
But he makes plans to return to them soon anyway . When he leaves Moira to sink the submarine , he explains to her that he is going home now to his family .
Dwight likes Moira's company a lot , but they both have never approached to do anything that would breach Dwight's marriage.
Dwight remains true to his family and therefor he doesn't take Moira with him when he goes ,,home,,.

3. Why do they behave like this ?
The main behavior comes from Mary's side. She refuses to accept the idea that they are all going to die soon.
She reacts with anger when Peter is showing her the suicide pills which he got to spare them unnecessary suffering from the radiation sickness.
Instead of worrying about the end , Mary plans the garden and the rest of their life, as if the war had never happened.
Peter tries to make Mary happy by buying her things for the Garden and Jennifer , their baby daughter.
But he also insists that they have to face the catastrophe and makes Plans for their fate to await it as a family.
It is clear to him that they will Not live long enough to enjoy their garden and their future.

4. Have you got an ambition that you would like to fulfill ?
No , I haven't got an ambition that I would like to fulfil. But I would try to spend as much time as possible with my family.
And I may would try to do something new I've never done before.

Section two - the Apple tree

1. Which characters do you think the two apple trees represent ? Quote from the text.
The old apple tree represents Midge.
When the protagonist is noticing the tree one day, it remembers him with its ,, sad bent head,, and ,,the tired branches " (l.15) of Midge.
She was always standing there, with her ,,long, thin back (...) bent sadly" (l.29) like the apple tree stands there now with its ,, top branch bent down, like a tired head ,,( l.8)
The gnarled, withered tree is the reflection of her.
It seems like the tree is making the protagonist reproaches , because all of it says : ,, it is your fault. I am like that because you do not take care of me . " ( l.17-18)
Midge was making him subliminal reproaches, too, as she was still alive, and she thought he ,, wouldn't like it if the house wasn't clean and proper " (l.62).
So she worked without getting herself a break.
The old tree takes the light and the space away from the young tree, which is standing close to it.
The old apple tree stands with its hanging down branches ,,sad and thin "(l.96) like Midge , who was ,, never happy ,, (l.33)
Everything on that tree reminds him of her and he's feeling a silent reproach going out from it.
That's the reason he wants to cut it down.

When his attention attracts the young tree he is suddenly remembering the young girl he met at a farm he worked on years ago.
He was cheating on Midge when he kissed the girl at that time.
Midge was standing right behind them as they talked and laughed with each other and Midges face turned ,, hard , like ice , and she was looking at the girl "(l.111)
The young apple tree stands ,, straight and strong,, (l.97) and it's branches are ,, lifted to the sky and seemed to enjoy the rain. "(L.97)
The protagonist compares it with the young girl , who seemd to be ,, happy , pretty, smiling,, (l.102) in his memories.
One night he looks at the tree ,, in the moonlight,, and it looks ,, brave and happy,, to him.
He remembers the young girl every time he sees the young apple tree.

2.what thought , in your opinion, is behind this smile ?
The thought behind this smile is probably that he finally has found a way to get rid of the apple tree. He is feeling relived because , in his opinion, every time he looks at the tree he is confronted with silent reproaches from Midge, who he associates with the tree,
He couldn't bear this circumstance and is trying to get tied of the tree, unfortunately his plans aren't working well.
Now he gets the chance to escape from the outbound judgement of the tree and he is taking it with relief.

3. Who was more to blame for the unhappy marriage ?
They were both guilty on the unhappy marriage.
Midge was working too hard and was never complaining herself about it, although she wasn't happy.
She was assuming all the work in the house and indicating her reproaches only in a passive- aggressive way.
Maybe the situation would have changed , if she had spoken out her thoughts.

But the protagonist is mostly to blame, because he was only pursuing his own interests and didn't gave Midge the feeling that she was valuable for him.
Neither that he was appreciating her hard work.
That was what made Midge became exacerbate , which made the situation only worse.
Because there was obtaining a depressive mood amongst them the protagonist yearned for a more optimistic mood.
When he met the young girl at the farm, he was attracted to her ease conditions.
Midge was knowing about the incident amongst them and only got more exacerbate and depressive.
In my opinion these series of actions were causing each other and for this reason they were both guilty of the unhappy marriage.

4.explain the end of the story.
At the end the protagonist is wandering up the hill behind the house to see if the young tree is still alive and to make sure it will bloom in spring.
He is reaching for the tree to touch it , when he falls down to the ground with his foot stuck in a deeper cut of the remaining trunk from the old apple tree.
He screams for help , but no one is hearing him.
He's afraid that he will die in the cold snow. A leftover branch , wet and cold, is touching his mouth and he compares it with a cold hand reaching for him through the dark.
In my opinion, the end is meant to be like a punishment for the protagonist for not taking care of others , especially his wife. Midge.
He is the main reason , why she is unhappy and he is only taking care of his selfish interests instead of trying
to make the life of both of them happy and comfortable by putting some effort in the marriage.
He is replacing Midge with a young girl, because he couldn't bear the depressive and bitter mood at home. Although he is to blame for the situation .

Now he is trying to delete all memories he has of Midge and at the end that is what constitutes his downfall .
He is guilty of his own mischief , because he is typ ring to ignore and erase the past and his mistakes.
He is relieved forgetting Midge and his memories, although he is to blame for her unhappy emotional state.
The tree, that is representing Midge, grants him a lesson about making others unhappy , beeing selfish and never taking care of his fellow men.
You'll end up as well unhappy and alone without someone taking care of you.
