The death penalty.

The death penalty, also called capital punishment, is still practiced today in many countries. There are a lot of methods for the execution: lethal injection, electrocution, hanging, to stone somebody to death and so on. Last English lesson we had a discussion about the death penalty. Some classmates were in favor, many other against the death penalty. But there was also a group which was undecided. I was one of them. We had to work out some arguments for both sides. The propnents said very quickly, that the death penalty deters criminals from committing serious offenses. But the other side argued very fast that studies show that execution does not prevent future crimes and murders. There are also other countries without the death penalty which have lower rates of crimes and murder. Revenge was also a subject of the discussion. Some people said it is easier for the bereaved to absorbe a loss when the murder will be execute. But is this the right message: to kill people who killed people? Is it right to play god? I think it is important to have a debate in our heads before coming to an opinion like that. In my opinion is a live in prision a worse punishment and more effective deterrent than an execution. Further more the justice system is bound to make no mistakes. In the case where people are wrongly imprisoned, they can be released from prison, but a wrongful execution can never righted. During the work out of my homework, I found out, that my mind was formed. Complete protection won`t be possible, even with the death penalty. And two wrongs dont make a right.

various methods for the execution: lethal injection, electrocution, hanging, to stone somebody to death and so on. Last English lesson we had a discussion about the death penalty. Some classmates were in favor, (BrE = favour) many others against the death penalty. But there was also a group which was undecided. I was one of them. We had to work out some arguments for both sides. The proponents said passionately, that the death penalty deters criminals from committing serious offenses. But the other side argued convincingly that studies show that execution does not prevent future crimes and murders. There are also other countries without the death penalty which have lower rates of crimes and murders. Revenge was another subject of the discussion. Some people said it would be easier for the bereaved to get over a loss when the murder was executed. But is this the right message, to kill people who killed people? Is it right to play god? I think it is important to debate this issue before coming to an opinion like that. In my opinion, life imprisonment is a worse punishment and more effective deterrent measure than an execution. Furthermore, the justice system is not immune to mistakes. In the case where people are wrongly imprisoned, they can be released from prison, but a wrongful execution is irreversible. During the work out of my homework, I could make up my own mind. Thus, in my opinion, a complete protection against misjudgements will not be possible, even with the death penalty. And two wrongs do not make a right. (Der letzte Satz verstehe ich nicht)
