Oh, it's a poem?!
I do know the text, but only as a song so far...
It's a poem by Katharine Lee Bates, sort of scribbled down when she was very impressed with the beauty of the American landscape while visiting Pikes Peak (in a prairie wagon ^^). It was written 1893 and published 2 years later and again (rewritten) in 1904. The melody we all (probably) know, is just one of a variety of melodies, albeit the most famous of all. In fact the melody existed before the poem, they were linked much later (1910).
Ich hatte übrigens das Gefühl, dass Laila hauptsächlich Probleme mit dem Wortverständnis hat, aber die vielen Interpretationsvorschläge werden sicher auch gerne angenommen. ^^
Leider muss ich sagen, dass ich mit patriotischem Liedgut so meine Probleme habe. Vielleicht, weil auch die deutsche Nationalhymne einst einfach nur den Wunsch nach nationaler Einheit und Lob der Heimat zum Ausdruck bringen wollte. Was hat man nur daraus gemacht.
