Pastor Donald wants to say that we should help everyone who need help because of their poverty for example.
Andy gets the mark "A" because of his kindness towards the bum. Andy donates him money in order to eat with him and Tommy in a restaurant.
Tommy gets the mark "B" because in principle he is a friendly and disciplined guy, who is pissed of with Andy, after he derides Pastor Donald.
Mrs. Skeffington gets the mark "C" because of her neutral part in the story. Of course, she informs Tommys and Andys parents because of their "transgression", but in my opinion such a behaviour by Tommy and Andy is more than unripe in a church.
Tommys partens get the marks "D" and "F", because I think they react false after they hear the story of the booting out from the church of their son, Tommy. They could talk with him friendly, but they exaggeraten and don't listen to him.
In my opinion Andy actuars in this situation very friendly and he is relaxed towards the bum. I think by deriding Tommy he loosens up the atmosphere and that's important in such a situation because Andy knows that's important in such a situation because Andy knows that the situation is very embarrassing for the bum.
Vielen Dank! The Bible tells us "if your enemy is hungry, feed him". But the reality shows that only a few people hold on to this wisdom. Why is it so difficult to put one's money where one's mouth is?
Andy and Tommy are two boys who have feed a hungry man in the short story "Bread on the Water" and therefore they follow one of the wisdoms of the Bible, which tells us: "If your enemy is hungry, feed him". But ironically they are checked out of a church because of Andys inappropriate behaviour towards Pastor Donald.
Maybe Andy mocks at Pastor Donald because he doubt the role of a church. Although a lot of people are religious, for example Christian, and visit churches, only a few people really help hungry people for example. At the end of the story Tommy and Andy get into frightful trouble from their parents because of their chucking out of the church, although they commit a more than Christian act by donating the bum a meal.
Summarized up it can be said that the proverb "Actions speak louder than words" apply to Andy and Tommy, but not to the other characters of the short story.
