The Characters feelings and the situation they're in is especially highlighted by camera and sound.
First, the reader is introduced to the new setting. Take for example the establishing shot at the beginning of the scene. It shows an accident involving two cars, one of them red and turned upside-down.
The woman in the red car, which turned out being Christine Thayer, is stuck and helpless. The point-of-view shot in the car shows that. Furthermore, she is often shown by a close shot being tangled up in the belt.
The situation in the car is dangerous. Camera shots from the inside of the car are taken to show the shattered glass. Not only that, there are also shots from the outside showing the gasoline flowing out of the car. The most essential scene supporting my thesis is showing the gasoline being lighted by a spark and the fire is spread throughout the car.
Ryan is concerned about Christine and tries to save her at all costs. As he frees her from the car the camera shows his facial expression several times by using an extreme close up. In addition, the moment the fire starts, after being pulled out of the car and forced to abandon Christine to her fate, he is seen by an eye-level shot how he is crouching back to the car in order to get her out.
Christine does not want to be saved at first. This is of course shown in the same way, as Ryan's feelings; with an extreme close up showing her face.
The scene is meant to be sad and dramatic. The different crane shots showing the exploding car and surroundings underline that. But this is not the only aspect worth mentioning. The score playing throughout the scene is building up the scene's atmosphere, and by getting louder and muting the voices and sound effects when the fire starts in Christine's car, one could assume that this symbolizes the climax. The music creates an emotional impact on the viewer through this, letting him think of the scene as sad.
So all in all and as I already indicated, the camera work and sound is playing an essential role in this scene, and supports the expression of emotion and atmosphere.
