Currant cake - "Traeubleskuche"

My friend Mick and I love baking cake together. We keep our eyes and ears open for new recipes and exchange our favorite once. Today we baked a Swabian currant meringue cake, a so called "Traeubleskuche". We prepared a short pastry, pre baked it for 15 minutes on 160 degree Celsius and let it cool down a little bit. Meanwhile we mixed one pound currants with 4 table spoons sugar and 150 grams ground walnuts. We filled this mixture onto our short cake. We beat 4 egg whites with 2 table spoons sugar and a pinch of salt very firm and spread it on top of the cake. We bake the cake for another 16 minutes or a bit longer at 160 degrees Celsius, until the surface becomes slightly brown, but not too dark. If one can see tiny honey drops on top of the meringue the cake is perfect.
Despite our cake did not show those little honey drops today, it tasted very good.
