Education

„Do not train children to learning by force and harshness, but direct them to it by what amuses their minds, so that you may be better able to discover with accuracy the peculiar bent of the genius of each.“ With these words, Plato describes the situation of learning in schools. Learning today, has many similarities to learning in Plato's lifetime, and still is a topic which needs to be discussed. Is Plato’s quotation too idealistic? Is it possible to strike the delicate balance between discipline and encouragement in educating children in schools and are there any strategies to suggest to encourage students to learn as far as possible on their own?

Plato’s quotation seems to be too idealistic. In many cases, a class is full of different students with different attitudes and individual talents. If one, as a teacher, is just too friendly and a kind of a „buddy“, many students could exploit this manner and absolutely are not intend to follow the lesson and just do what they want. The lesson could get out of hand of the teacher and learning just becomes a minor point. So, in my opinion, Plato's quotation is just too idealistic, because learning by force and harshness, if it plays just a little role in lesson, is absolutely necessary to take children back to the reality of school.

Weather it is possible to strike the balance between discipline and encouragement or not, seems to be part of the teacher. If one is a teacher, who just wants to reach the goal of the lesson, do not want to notice problems in learning of individual students or is not worried about the progress in learning and just wants to go home without doing anything, he absolutely not striked a balance between discipline and encouragement because he is not interested in. On the other hand, if one is a teacher who urges distracted students, defers to special wishes or gives a lesson which is rich in variety and maybe supported by vivid media, this teacher could strike a personal balance between discipline and encouragement to make learning a lot more attractive.

There are some strategies to encourage students to learn as far as possible on their own. As Plato says, one as a teacher has to direct students to learning by amusing their minds. Amusing minds in this case means, that every single student has different preferences. Knowing these preferences could be very helpful in planning the lessons. If, for example, more than one student likes sports, soccer or maybe basketball, the teacher could integrate these topics into his lessons. Showing videos with a special learning content like vocabulary, history of sports or to display the social behavior of a team. Additionally, the teacher could use the direct environment to let the students explore nature, go to a museum or just to do excursions to interesting places.

All in all, Plato's quotation has a lot of truth in it. Of course, it is not possible to waive force and harshness to train children to learn. One just has to strike the delicate balance between discipline and encouragement in educating children in schools and there are many possibilities to explore individual strategies to be a good teacher.
