There are many examples of famous works by American authors that include symbolism. So it is not very surprising that symbolism is used by John Steinbeck in his three novels Of Mice and Men, The Grapes of Wrath and The Pearl.
Of Mice and Men is about two disparate migrant workers, who dream about a better life. The novel is set during the Great Depression as well as The Grapes of Wrath, which deals with the problems of a migrant family. The Pearl is about a young family trapped in poorness, finding a pearl.
Symbols represent something else by association and their explanatory power is used by John Steinbeck. For example, there are major symbols in The Pearl: The pearl, Kino’s canoe and of course also the scorpion. They symbolize different abstract ideas, indeed the scorpion is seen as evil. Furthermore light and music, which serve as symbols, are particular important in this novel. John Steinbeck also uses Christian symbols, for example Jim Casy can be seen as a Christ figure in The Grapes of Wrath. (“Bookstove”). Moreover talismanic symbols appear in John Steinbeck’s works, for example Kino’s pearl in The Pearl or the land in Of Mice and Men and The Grapes of Wrath (Lieber 263).
This research paper is going to explore the symbolism Steinbeck uses, especially with regard to differences between these three novels. First of all there will be a short look at each novel on its own, and afterwards the paper focuses on special symbolism, like Christian symbolism, and then the paper will concentrate on the comparison of the novels.
Symbols can be seen in a lot of different ways, and therefore, the interpretation of the symbols appearing in Of Mice and Men, The Grapes of Wrath and The Pearl depends on how the symbols are perceived and what they could stand for.
Thanks
