Es wäre super, wenn ihr mir auch einen kleinen Kommentar abgeben würdet.
Danke im voraus.
“Changing metropolis” define one of the most legendary city in the world - London.
In the past 30 years, the capital city developed from an industrial city to a financial centre and undergo an important step into a modern one. Of course there are some disadvantages associated with which concern London with its 33 boroughs around.
West Kensington is a good example to show the negative side of metropolis’ development in the past three decades. In general the borough isn’t boring at all.
You can see a huge contrast in the city itself concerning the people, the areas and the flats. First of all, it’s a multicultural district, where people from around the world live. “Australian travel agents, all- night shops run by dwarfish Bengalis.(…)”
(ll.41-42). It is traced back to World War II where many people in England died and as a result there was a labour shortage in 1950 to 1960. Consequently British employers looked for workers in the Commonwealth countries and for example invited Indians or Pakistanis. Many migrants opened their own shop or work in textile industries.
London has got plenty of universities. People from all the world came to study there.
Furthermore a lot of young people especially students live in West Kensington.
Students have to pay enrolment fee and additionally they don’t have jobs
If they study in London, they cant afford live in the centre because its too expensive. For this reason they move to another borough, like West Kensington where flats are cheaper.
In former times West Kensington was eminently respectable with its expensive shops, the wealthy people and VIPs but live has changed. Nowadays you can find a lot of poor people living in run-down flats surrounded by red light districts, where transvestites, drug-addicted people and criminals live. Whereas the wealthy people moved out from there into other boroughs.
A reason for the run-down houses was World War II. In September 1940 was the bombing of London by Germany called “the blitz”. 20.000 people were killed and 25.000 people were injured. A huge part of London was destroyed and some buildings still weren’t rebuild.
